New to tarot?
Tarot is a deck of 78 illustrated cards. For more than five hundred years people have drawn a few, looked at the pictures, and asked what those pictures stir in them about a question. It is a conversation with yourself, with the cards as the prompt.
78 cards in two groups. The 22 Major Arcana (The Fool, The Star, The Moon…) are the big chapters of a life. The 56 Minor Arcana are the everyday: four suits of 14 cards each.
Wands are drive and creativity. Cups are feeling and relationships. Swords are thought and decisions. Pentacles are work, money and the body.
A card can arrive upright or upside down. Reversed doesn’t mean “bad”. It usually points to the same theme turned inward, blocked or slowed.
You bring a question. Cards are drawn at random. Each card sits in a position (the past, the present, what is opening). The reading connects the picture to your question so you can see it from a new angle.
The science of it
The cards don’t know your future. No study shows they do. But psychology can explain, in surprising detail, why a reading can feel so true and why it can genuinely help.
78 × 77 × 76. Add that each card can land upright or reversed and it becomes 3,651,648. Your three-card reading is one of millions.
78! is about 1.1 followed by 115 zeros. The observable universe holds about 10⁸⁰ atoms, so a thoroughly shuffled tarot deck has almost certainly never been in that order before, anywhere, ever.
Tarot began as a card game in 15th-century northern Italy. People started using it to reflect and divine in the late 1700s. The artwork most readers know today was drawn in 1909 by Pamela Colman Smith.
People see faces in clouds and stories in ink blots. Psychologists call it pareidolia, and it is the principle behind projective tests. A tarot image is deliberately open, so what you notice in it says something about what you are already carrying.
In 1948 the psychologist Bertram Forer gave students a “personal” description that was identical for everyone. They rated it about 4.3 out of 5 for accuracy. This is the Forer, or Barnum, effect. We tell you openly so you can read with clear eyes: the feeling of being known is not proof of prediction.
In a large study of more than 20,000 people, economist Steven Levitt had people flip a coin on a real life decision. Those who followed the coin and made the change were happier six months later. Randomness doesn’t know the answer, but it can break a stalemate and show you what you were hoping for.
Since the 1980s, James Pennebaker’s research has found that writing about what troubles us can improve wellbeing. Asking a clear question and sitting with a reading does something similar: it turns a swirl into a sentence.
Carl Jung believed certain figures, the wanderer, the mother, the trickster, the hermit, recur in every culture. Tarot’s major cards read like a gallery of them. Seeing your situation as a chapter in a very old story can make it feel less lonely.
Tarot is not science and doesn’t pretend to be. What the science explains is why it works as a tool for reflection, and that is how Tara uses it: slowly, kindly, and without ever telling you what will happen.
